JOB TITLE: Ophthalmic Technician.
REPORTS TO: Practice Manager/Physician.
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt.

JOB OVERVIEW:  We are looking for a motivated, people-first individual to join our team as an Ophthalmic Technician. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Greet and interview patients, gathering ocular and medical history in an accurate and empathetic manner.
  • Perform routine diagnostic tests using ophthalmic instruments, including intraocular pressure measurements, visual field testing, basic motility assessments, and fundus photography.
  • Assist physicians during diagnostic evaluations and minor surgical procedures, including instrument preparation, sterile setup, and documentation.
  • Administer topical medications or diagnostic drugs as directed by the provider.
  • Prepare and position patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures to ensure their comfort and safety.
  • Support physician-led patient education efforts, helping patients understand their diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient records and sensitive information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Document patient information accurately and thoroughly in the electronic medical record.
  • Record patient charges for the billing department in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Participate in occasional travel between practice locations as needed.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare, stock, and maintain exam and procedure rooms; monitor and replenish supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Perform basic patient triage per established office protocols.
  • Represent the practice professionally at all times through appearance, attitude, and communication.
  • Follow all clinic policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Contribute as a collaborative and dependable team member.
  • Manage day-to-day job situations with professionalism and a positive outlook.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
  • Dependable, with a stable employment history and a track record of showing up and following through.
  • A natural communicator who genuinely enjoys helping and interacting with others.
  • Positive, professional, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented and able to follow instructions carefully and consistently.
  • Ready to commit to a long-term role and grow with our team.
  • Eager to learn clinical skills.

Education/Experience: Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent with experience in an ophthalmology setting and/or willing to train as an Ophthalmology Assistant.
  • Medical Assistant who is a graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program, with an interest in ophthalmology.

Preferred:
  • One year of direct health care clinical experience.
  • Successful completion of a JRCOMP (Joint Review Committee for Ophthalmic Medical Personnel) approved program for Ophthalmology Assistants.
  • One year of satisfactory, full-time work experience under ophthalmologic supervision.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Stand or Sit - Must be able to remain in a stationary position (standing or sitting) 100% of the time.
  • Walk - Must be able to freely move about the clinic in order to access patient rooms, equipment, charts, etc.
  • Use of hands/fingers - Consistently operates a computer keyboard in order to enter patient information.
  • Stoop/kneel/crouch - Occasionally must position self to obtain stored equipment.
  • Talk/hear - Frequently communicates with co-workers and patients regarding patient care. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
  • Carry/lift - Occasional must lift supplies/equipment up to 50 pounds.
